First Grade Medieval Unit

First grade has been learning about the Middle Ages. As they read Knight at Dawn from the Magic Treehouse Series, students engaged in a number of medieval-themed activities over the course of two weeks.

Since they learned about catapults, which were used to lay siege to castles and fortifications during the medieval period, first grade students worked with the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade S.T.E.A.M. Mastery students to engineer and create their own catapults!

First grade held an official “tournament,” which included multiple events, such as jousting, an armor race, and archery. They learned about how books were written in the Middle Ages and made their own illuminations with the first letter of their names and decorated with images that are meaningful to them. They created pomander balls, and even had a parade for the preschool and lower school!

Thank you to our great first grade team, Mrs. Mena and Mrs. Palacio, for their passion and creativity in making history come alive for their students!
