Each year on February 23rd, we celebrate Conchita Day.
Conchita Day is a celebration of Conchita Espinosa’s birthday, during which every year we come together as a school community to honor and celebrate our founder, but more than that, Conchita Day is a time to reflect on what it means to be a member of the Conchita Family. Students have spent the last week thinking about, discussing, and writing about their school’s history, the values that have made CEA what it is, and what CEA and their Conchita family means to them.
On Wednesday, February 23rd, we came together in the theatre to celebrate our founder and our school family through music, dance, poetry, spoken word, and community. Our student reflections, from the youngest speakers in first grade through the eighth grade, were testament to Conchita’s legacy, and the love, determination, and perseverance that is CEA.
The Senior Music Mastery performed multiple pieces, among them Pachunquita, composed by contemporary Cuban composer, Norman Milanes. Maestro Milanes composed this piece for the CEA Music Mastery, specifically dedicated to his granddaughter, Nancy Milanes, to play on the xylophone.
The Senior Music Mastery Ensemble debuted the piece in CEA’s Rosita Segovia Theatre. Marisol Moreno and Cristina Masdueño choreographed a castanets suite with Conservatory Spanish dancers age eight to thirteen, in honor of Rosita Segovia, founder of the CEC Spanish dance department. Below are links to enjoy the performances by the students at CEA and CEC.
