On July 9, 2013, Nicole Medina and her mother participated in a State Dinner at the White House, hosted by Michelle Obama. As the Florida state winner of the Healthy Lunch Challenge, Nicole and her mother were invited to Washington, D.C., where they had lunch and met the President and First Lady.

This past spring Mrs. Frades led her students on a math adventure to improve not only math skills but also the nutrition of our school lunches. Students kept nutritional diaries, calculated nutritional information, worked percentages and ratios and eventually created a month’s worth of cafeteria lunches. Students participated in the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge by submitting a recipe for a healthy and cost effective lunch. Three finalists were chosen in each state. In the state of Florida, two of the three finalists were from CEA – Barbara Silva and Nicole Medina. We are proud to announce that Nicole Medina was the winner for the state of Florida. Nicole and a parent will be traveling to Washington, D.C. on July 8 and attend a Kids’ State Dinner at the White House on July 9. Last year’s dinner can be seen at http://bcove.me/vhg33tls. Nicole is going to have a wonderful experience and represent CEA well. Thank you, Mrs. Frades, for taking the time to understand that math is more than worksheets and drills. You have given Nicole and all of our students a very special gift – our education is not about going to school, it’s about living our lives. |
