International Day of Peace
On Friday, September 21st, CEA celebrated the International Day of Peace, or "Peace Day." Established in 1981, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace.
Today, more than ever, it is important to meditate on the importance of peace and how we can contribute to creating a peaceful environment in our communities. All Conchita students, from our youngest to our oldest, took time to reflect on the meaning of peace and how they can be peacemakers.
Pre-Primary class prepared for Peace Day creating peace signs. They took time to listen to relaxing music, reflect and design their own peace signs!
1st Grade wrote a peace day poem together as a class.
2nd grade created olive branches as a symbol of peace to give to someone they may have hurt. After reading I am Peace A Book of Mindfulness by Susan Verde, they discussed the importance of being kind, mindful, forgiving, and an instrument of peace. The students reflected on how their words and actions may have hurt someone and decided on who to give olive branches to. Some students even asked for extras to give to family members and other students around the school. In addition, students created an acrostic poem about peace.
"It was very heartwarming to see olive branches being given and in some instances exchanged in my classroom. My goal is for students to continue to be peace keepers and know when and how to right their wrongs to make our world a better place." - Mrs. Hernandez
After reflecting on what they value about peace, 3rd grade students wrote acrostic poems to raise awareness of the importance of PEACE.
7th grade students wrote poems about what peace means to them inside a flower. Then, they put their flowers together to create a giant peace sign.
In 8th grade, students also wrote poems about peace. They then turned their poems into peace cranes by writing them on origami paper and folding them into cranes.
